This is a Mino ware kataguchi/serving dish. Large size, approximately 10 inches in diameter.
Although it can be used for practical purposes as tableware, it has a strong presence even if it is just placed as interior decoration. Since it is a picture of congratulations, it is good to use it on a special occasion as a lucky charm.
Mino ware is ceramics produced in the Tono region of Gifu Prefecture, including Tajimi, Toki, Kani, Mizunami, and Kasahara, and is a craft with a history and tradition spanning more than 1,000 years.
This is the work of Wada Hitori, a ceramic artist of Mino ware. The superb harmony between the delicate and intricate details and the dramatic composition of his work shows his maturity as a ceramic artist.
Peony, the king of the hundred flowers, means “immortality” and “longevity,” while the phoenix also has the meaning of “immortality” and “rejuvenation. Most appealing of all is the luminous expression that is reminiscent of legendary tales.
The mouth on the side is only a decorative design, so it does not play a functional role of pouring liquid.
