Gentle and Serene Cat Design
This brooch depicts a curled-up cat with white and gray fur, evoking a sense of calm and tenderness. Using the traditional “wire cloisonné” technique, silver wires outline the cat while black polishing highlights delicate facial expressions. The glossy enamel enhances the cat’s presence. Simply adding this brooch to your outfit brings a touch of quiet elegance to everyday life.
About the Technique: Wire Cloisonné
Wire cloisonné (yūsen-shippō) is a traditional Japanese technique in which fine metal wires, usually silver, are used to draw patterns, and enamel is filled in and fired. In this piece, the wires define the cat’s form and expressions, while black polishing adds depth and dimension. The interplay of translucent enamel and silver lines creates a delicate, almost ethereal effect. This technique requires precision and artistry, and reflects the artisan’s deep observation and affection for the cat motif.
About the Artisan
Keiko Sera is a cloisonné artist based in Narashino City, Chiba Prefecture. She honors traditional techniques while infusing her work with a contemporary artistic vision. Keiko creates pieces that are “beautiful both to display and to wear,” blending meticulous craftsmanship with subtle design innovation. Her work embodies the spirit of Arts & Crafts, merging tradition and modernity in a way that quietly enriches everyday life.
About Cloisonné (Shippōyaki)
Cloisonné is a Japanese traditional craft where glass enamel is applied to a metal base (usually copper) and fired at around 800°C. The result is a lustrous, jewel-like surface with vibrant, translucent colors. The word “shippō” (七宝) originates from Buddhism and refers to the seven treasures: gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, coral, agate, and pearl. Cloisonné combines stunning color with deep cultural meaning, making it both a decorative and auspicious piece of art.
This cat brooch is perfect not only for cat lovers but also for anyone who appreciates fine craftsmanship and the subtle beauty of Japanese traditional art.
